What is Tufting?
Tufting is a modern technique for creating handmade rugs. It uses a tufting gun that shoots yarn into a backing fabric. In just a few hours, you can transform simple materials into a fluffy, vibrant, and satisfying rug. Rug tufting is both relaxing and rewarding, which is why we dedicate a full workshop area to tufting.
How do you Tuft a Rug?
Don’t worry if it sounds complicated—our team is here to guide you every step of the way. That said, watching a few videos on tufting beforehand can definitely be helpful.

Practice
Start on our oversized tufting frame and practice using the tufting gun. Draw lines, circles, or simple shapes and experiment with the needle threader. Mistakes here are welcome—better to make them before working on your actual rug.
Pro Tips on Using the Tufting Gun
- Apply firm but gentle pressure.
- Let the gun guide your movements.
- Move the gun up or sideways only—never downward.
- Made a mistake? Simply pull the yarn out and redo the section.
- Remember: the design appears on the back of the fabric, not the side facing you!
Once you’ve practiced enough and feel comfortable, it’s time to start working on your actual rug.
Choose Your Design – Pick a design that inspires you—popular characters, superheroes, PokĂ©mon, sports logos, or any photo you love. Save your reference image on your phone, and we’ll help transfer it to the backing fabric.

Sketch the Design – You can freehand your sketch, or we can project your image onto the fabric. Use a black Sharpie to outline, and mark colors with letters (e.g., “R” for red, “G” for green) to make filling in the yarn easier. For designs with letters or numbers, flip your design when mounting the cloth on the frame.

Choose Your Yarn Colors – Select one yarn for each color in your design from our extensive yarn pegboards. Always include black yarn for outlines. For example, a Santa Claus rug might need red, white, green, tan, and black yarns.
Start Tufting – Now it’s time for the fun part, so let’s begin tufting!

Sit comfortably, pick up your tufting gun, and follow your design’s outline with black yarn first. Complete the outline, then switch to your next color. This is the side facing you. You will be looking at the back of the rug when sitting down.

This is the side facing away from you. This is the actual rug. Take breaks, stand up, and look at the back of the frame to evaluate your progress. Continue until your design is fully filled in. Take breaks as needed—tufting takes a few hours.
Once you finish tufting, you’re done! Our staff will take over and complete the remaining steps:
1. Apply Adhesive: We coat the back of the rug. Adhesive sets for 24 hours.
2. Cut Out the Rug: Scissors are used to trim backing fabric, leaving 1–2 inches around the edges.

3. Glue Edges: Fold and attach the extra fabric with a hot glue gun for a clean finish.
4. Attach Backing: Add the final rug backing and press firmly to attach the backing.

5. Trimming: We trim your rug with clips and scissors. Your rug is now ready to go to its new home!
Note: The finishing process takes several days. We will notify you when your rug is ready. Rush options may be available for out-of-town customers—please inquire in advance. 24-hour rush cases are available occasionally; please inquire beforehand.
